Miscellaneous: Schmeichel learned his trademark “star-jump” that he confronted opposing strikers with during his days playing handball. His name comes from his Polish father – his mother was Danish – and his family are all very musical. His father is a professional pianist and Peter can also play, as well as the guitar, flute and drums. As well as being 1,93m tall he is also very broad – when playing he used to wear an XXXL goalkeeper’s shirt. The British Government awarded him an honorary MBE in 2000 and in 2004 he was named as one of the 125 greatest living footballers at the “FIFA 100″ celebrations.
