Cobi Jones – Goal in a swamp
Whether in terms of quantity, beauty or just drama, there are so many memorable Cobi Jones performances, goals and assists. A selection:
• He became the first US player in almost 28 years to score in three consecutive international matches by claiming the winner in a 1 -0 victory over Peru in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Miami.
• He turned into a one-man wrecking crew in the USA’s 4-0 demolition of South Africa in the 2000 US Cup opening match, scoring twice and creating the other two goals.
• Jones helped save the USA’s skin in the 72nd minute of a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Guatemala in September 2000, controlling a long Jovan Kirovski ball deep in the penalty area and crossing to Brian McBride, who slotted home for the only goal of the match.
• With the USA in desperate need of a goal while trailing Panama in stoppage time in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier in 2004, Jones again displayed his magic as a second-half sub on parts of the field in Panama City that could only be described as a swamp. A Greg Vanney pass to Landon Donovan hit a small puddle and stopped, but Jones reacted quickly and beat goalkeeper Donaldo Gonzalez at the far post to salvage a 1-1 draw and a point.
