Simone Laudehr became the golden girl of the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in China when she scored just before the end to seal a 2-0 victory for Germany over Brazil. Her header was voted Goal of the Month by television viewers in Germany. The 21-year-old, who began her basic military service with the German army in October, has a social conscience and decided to auction off her World Cup boots on eBay for a good cause. Her choice was Rio Children’s Village, an organisation that helps children and adolescents in need in Brazil. The organisation build and maintain children’s villages, provides schooling and vocational education and improves the standard of life of street children. In Germany, it raises public awareness for the situation faced by these children. Laudehr said: “Out of respect for the great showing by our opponents in the final, I would like to see as much money as possible go to this important project.” The auction ran for three weeks until 21 October and raised 2,411 euros.
