During the MLS off-season, he also played for Barcelona SC in 1997 and Emelec in 1998 (both Ecuador).
Honours: League championship winner in Bolivia (1991, 1992), Chile (1993), the USA (1996,1997,1999) and Ecuador (1997). Won the South American Under-16 Championship in 1986 and took part in six Copas America (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 (runner-up) and 1999). 72 caps for Bolivia, 13 goals.
Miscellaneous: He was trained at the Tahuichi football academy, one of the most prestigious in South America. On 12 April 2006 the Bolivian parliament awarded him the “Medal of Merit”. In 2005 he was named one of the best players in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS) and in October 2007, the members of DC United’s championship-winning side of 1997 played a tribute match in honour of their captain against Hollywood United, a team of ex-footballers and TV and film stars, at the RFK Stadium in Washington.
