MORE THAN 21 MILLION EUR FOR SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES

Italy may have been crowned football world’s champions on the pitch but the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM also produced another major winner – children. 6 villages for 2006, a joint fundraising campaign between SOS Children’s Villages and FIFA, collected some 21 million EUR in donations, which will give 800 orphaned and abandoned children worldwide a new home. A further 5 000 children and 1 000 families in need with benefit from new ancillary social and educational projects.

A total of 16.2 million EUR was collected in donations, while a further 3 000 people pledged their support to SOS Children’s Villages as sponsors. According to the organization’s past experiences, the vast majority of these new sponsors will make a long-term commitment to SOS Children’s Villages and are expected to provide an additional 1 million EUR per year in donations over the next five years.

As such the overall income generated by 6 villages for 2006 is expected to surpass 21 million EUR and exceed the campaign’s initial fundraising goal of 18 million EUR.

FIFA made a 500 000 CHF (320 000 EUR) donation on behalf of the referees of the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM. What is more FIFA also donated income collected from fines in connection with yellow and red cards at the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM to 6 villages rising more than 300 000 EUR.

Every donation made since the campaign was launched in December 2004 is being used for the construction and the maintenance over five years of six new children’s villages and ancillary social programs, one each in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine and Vietnam.

Of the donations already received, three quarters came from individual donors, while the remaining quarter was provided by various corporate partners, as well as FIFA and its close partners such as Infront Sports&Media, who donated all proceed generated from the commercial public viewing licenses in Germany, which amounted to 700 000 EUR.

Other spectacular 6 Villages for 2006 fundraising activities included the FIFA World Cup TV Ticket Show, which saw proceeds of more than 600 000 EUR flow into the campaign pot, while an autograph book including the original signatures of all 736 footballers and coaches, which was donated by FIFA and the local organizing Committee, was auctioned for 61 500 EUR.

In addition, the support and tireless efforts of partners and friends of 6 villages for 2006 over the past two years was vital in ensuring the success of the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of football’s biggest tournament. Footballing greats such as Franz Beckenbauer, Pele, Andriy Shevchenko, Fabio Cannavaro, Wayne Rooney, Dunga, Jay-Jay Okocha, Hugo Sanchez, Ruudvan Niesterooy, Mahmoud El-Khatieb and many more all took time off from their busy schedules to support 6 villages for 2006.

As part of its humanitarian activities, FIFA has been supporting SOS Children’s Villages for more that 10 years, putting its events and their global platform at the service of children in need worldwide and helping finance of construction of sports infrastructures in SOS villages in more than 40 countries.
