Sales of football shirts

Sales of football shirts are more lucrative in Europe than anywhere else in the world. According to the European Jersey Report, published annually by German market research institute Sport+Markt, the six key European markets of England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain will generate estimated total revenue of EUR 366.3 million from shirt sales during the 2006-07 season, a 6.4% increase on the previous year. Weighing in with highest combined revenue from shirt advertising, Germany’s Bundesliga clubs boast a total of EUR 94.6 million, while English Premier League teams come second in the list with EUR 76.5 million and those from France’s Ligue 1 third with EUR 56.1 million. In terms of individual shirt deals, Manchester United received the most in 2006-07 with EUR 20.8 million, followed by Bayern Munich (20 million), Real Madrid (17 million), Lyon (16 million) and Chelsea (14.5 million). In the core European markets, 35 clubs are sponsored by financial or insurance companies, 31 by companies from the tourism industry, 13 by bookmakers and 10 by car manufacturers.
