Peter Schmeichel – No Ambition On His Behalf

Many players are seasoned internationals by the time they are 20, but it is different with goalkeepers: they do not peak until much later. Kasper has won junior international honours for Denmark already but he still has time to develop his physique and technique until he is even more like his dad, even if he is a couple of inches shorter than his 6ft 4in father. Peter Schmeichel did not arrive at Manchester United until he was 28, and so he is not falling into the trap of burdening his son with undue expectations. “I carry no ambition on his behalf, I just want him to be happy,” he says. “It wouldn’t be fair for me to add pressure. It’s difficult enough for him to carry the name. He’s doing what he wants to do and that makes me and his mum very happy.”
Clean sheets for Kasper, dirty work for his dad. One thing you can say about the Schmeichels is that it seems impossible to keep them out of the limelight.
