Football News – CAF

The local organising committee (LOC) for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) tournament recently launched its volunteer programme for the tournament at a function that also witnessed the unveiling of a logo for the programme as well as a plaque for the tournament. The volunteer programme, which is expected to position 2,000 helpers across the four venues for the 26th ACN in Ghana, was launched by the Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports, O. B. Amoah. Also present were Deputy Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment Dr Charles Brimpong Yeboah, members of the LOC board, Herman Beetge (a volunteer consultant from South Africa) and other dignitaries. In his keynote address, Amoah pledged the support of the government, the LOC and sponsors towards the successful implementation of the volunteer programme, saying that the programme would enhance Ghana’s status and facilitate the promotion of social, economic and cultural issues. He therefore asked Ghanaians and foreign residents over the age of 18 to sign up for the programme to ensure its success. “The government, the LOC and the sponsors, knowing the significance of the volunteer programme, will provide funding and technical support for recruitment, training, subsistence and other logistics for a very fruitful programme,” he said.
