On the same day – 31 August, an extra-time brace from Iraq’s AFC Asian Cup-winning captain Younis Mahmoud helped Al Gharafa beat 10-man Al Sailiya 4-2 and win the Sheikh Jassim Cup at the Doha Stadium. Ahmad Mubarak opened the scoring for Al Sailiya in the 10th minute and Burkina Faso’s Abdoulaye Cisse made it 2-0 in the 29th minute. Abdelhaq Aarif reduced the deficit for Al Gharafa six minutes later, but Ai Sailiya were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when Mubarak was given his marching orders. Abdelhaq took advantage by netting the equaliser for Al Gharafa 10 minutes later but the teams were still locked at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Mahmoud, who was named MVP of the AFC Asian Cup, scored Al Gharafa’s third goal in the 103rd minute and made it 4-2 in the 112th minute.
