FIGURE OF THE MONTH

The number of female match officials – 15 referees and 29 assistant referees – who started their preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 (10 – 13 September) on 11 January at a 10-day training camp in the sunny Canary Islands (Spain). A second group of approximately 50 match officials will take part in training sessions at the Algarve Cup, the prestigious annual international women’s football tournament in Portugal, which this year takes place from 6 to 14 March. Once these two training camps have been completed, the FIFA Referees Committee will narrow down the prospective officials for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to a shortlist of candidates who will be invited to attend a final round of preparations in Zurich. The final list of match officials for the tournament will consist of 12 referees, 24 assistant referees and three fourth officials.
