Figure of the month: 1.5 million
David Beckham’s Major League Soccer I debut on 9 August broke all viewer records for the US television channel EPSN, when some 1.5m viewers watched the Englishman’s 18-minute appearance for Los Angeles Galaxy. The broadcaster’s previous record of 1.09m had stood since 1996. Beckham had been forced to postpone his debut several times on account of an ankle injury, which also prevented him from playing the full match. LA Galaxy lost 1-0 to DC United, with Brazilian Luciano Emilio scoring the only goal. A sell-out crowd of 46,686 watched the action at the RFK Stadium in Washington. Beckham had drawn fans in their thousands not only to the television but also to the stadium itself.
