David Beckham wanted to bring down the curtain on his career in a relaxed fashion in Major League Soccer (MLS), but he obviously did not reckon with Adrian Serioux. The Canadian international made a brutal sliding tackle from behind on the Englishman in Los Angeles Galaxy’s 5-1 league victory over FC Dallas at the end of May, after which Serioux apparently whispered to the shocked midfielder: “Welcome to the MLS, baby!” A visibly angered Beckham had to be held back by his team-mates as referee Baldomero Toledo showed Serioux the red card. When the Canadian left the field, Beckham blew him kisses and waved after him – for which he saw the yellow card. “It was a terrible foul. I could have broken my leg,” said the 33-year-old. Beckham’s reaction riled the 22,331 crowd, who then booed the former England captain every time he touched the ball. Beckham’s response? After laying on the perfect cross for Galaxy’s fifth goal, he turned to the crowd and put his right forefinger to his lips in a shushing motion. Beckham hit the headlines again a few days later when he scored a goal from 70 (!) yards out in the 3-1 victory over Kansas City in the league.
