Colin Slater – The Voice Of Notts County

After 48 seasons reporting on Notts County FC of England’s League Two, radio broadcaster Colin Slater achieved a remarkable personal milestone on 17 November 2007 when he commentated on his 2,000th match for BBC Radio Nottingham.
Notts County v. Macclesfield Town may not have been the most glamorous fixture ever, but for Colin Slater and his legion of faithful listeners, the afternoon became a celebration of a wonderful career for the man supporters know simply as “The Voice of Notts County”.
Born in Bradford in 1934, Slater moved to Nottingham in 1959 to further his career in journalism with the Nottingham Evening News. He immediately began reporting on Notts County and his first match was a 2-1 home victory over Chester City on 22 August 1959.
Nine years later he moved into local radio with the BBC, thus embarking on a long and successful broadcasting career that has encompassed the highs and lows of Notts County, a traditional English league club that has enjoyed its good moments but usually struggles.
