The Confederation of African Football (CAF) met in Johannesburg on 10 and 11 September 2007 under the chairmanship of CAF President M. Issa Hayatou to bring its 50th anniversary celebrations, which had begun on 3 September, to a close. South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Molefi Oliphant expressed his thanks to CAF for organising standing committee meetings in South Africa. recognising SAFA as one of its founding members alongside Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia. “Organising 13 CAF standing committee meetings in three different cities, namely Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Johannesburg, has given South Africans the opportunity to get to know the continent’s football governing body much better, and we are delighted that CAF has awarded its Order of Merit in Gold to the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, as a representative of one of its founding members and in recognition of his contribution to the development of football in Africa,” said Oliphant
