Blatter And Platini En Route Together
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini paid a visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan together on 16 and 17 October 2007. During the first stopover of their whirlwind trip to Eurasia, they had a glimpse of the progress that Armenian football has made in recent years. Blatter and Platini unveiled projects that had been funded by FIFA’s Goal programme. Among the dignitaries they met for discussions during their 24-hour stay in Armenia were the President of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and the Minister for Youth and Sport, Armen Grygoryan. After arriving in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, Blatter and Platini officially inaugurated the House of Football, built with the help of funds from Goal and UEFA’s HatTrick project. Elkhan Mammadov, the Azerbaijan association’s new General Secretary attended the ceremony. After a press conference aiso attended by the Minister for Youth and Sport, Azad Ragimov, Blatter and Platini paid a visit to the state University for Physical Education and Sport. In a packed auditorium. Vice Dean Qahraman Mammadyarov presented the FIFA President with the honorary doctorate of the Institute of Football. During an official banquet hosted before their departure, Azerbaijan President Ilkham Aliev bestowed one of the country’s highest distinctions on Blatter and Platini and discussed a broad range of matters with his guests.
