Ben Collett

Ben Collett was once a very promising talent who was on his way to becoming a professional footballer before misfortune struck. On his debut for Manchester United reserves in 2003, the then 18-year-old was fouled by Middlesbrough’s Gary Smith and seriously injured. The tackle broke Collett’s right leg in two places and ended his career. But now a court has awarded the 23-year-old almost five million euros in compensation, a record payout in the realm of sport. After the foul, Collett sued both Middlesbrough and Smith. He was forced to spend several years in physiotherapy before making a failed attempt to resurrect his career.
