Assessment Of The Psychology Programme

Assessment is a vital component of any training programme. It is used to measure to what extent prior objectives have been achieved and enables paths for future development to be laid down.
The assessment model established for the psychology programme was based on three convergent strategies:
• Observation and “critical assessment” by the psychology team;
• Verbal post-match feedback from the referees themselves and the technical staff;
• Activity assessment questionnaire. The information compiled reflects a considerably high degree of general and personal satisfaction that highlights the importance and the usefulness of the areas worked on and the techniques rehearsed.
The referees have commented that the mental training and the materials used were extremely well tailored to their needs. In their opinion, the practice sessions helped to achieve what they really needed: the optimum mental qualities for their performance on the pitch, i.e. calm, focus and confidence.
In additional to the informal gathering of data, the psychology team’s work and the techniques used were formally assessed through an anonymous questionnaire filled out by all the refereeing teams. The questionnaire grades the usefulness of each of the areas practised on a scale of 1 (not useful) to 10 (very useful).
The most important findings of the questionnaire were as follows:
• The overall programme received an average rating of 8.01, indicating a general level of satisfaction.
• The average rating of all the items evaluated is greater than 7.5, thus indicating that every single aspect of the programme was accepted. All aspects of the programme were acknowledged as suitable and useful.
• The highest rating (8.62) referred to the need to maintain programmes of this type in future preparation plans.
The results show a general demand not to limit psychological preparation to the short period when referees are together during the competitions but to carry out a long-term programme, as with the other aspects of preparation.
