AFC – Football News

A grassroots and youth football development workshop was held in the cities of Chengdu and Nanjing in China PR recently in order to create awareness and implement the strategic development plan of Vision China. Over 150 participants from the Nanjing and Chengdu associations, teachers and coaches from various districts as well as representatives from sports and education bureaus attended the workshop. Both football associations introduced their grassroots and youth development programmes in the workshop. An inter-class football programme started at each school in November, while the Chengdu Schools Premier League has seen under-13 and under-15 teams vie for the top honours. Initially, 16 teams are to play home-and-away matches while the number will be increased to 30 next year. The Chengdu Schools League started in December 2007, open to all school teams, and saw U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17 teams in action.
Nanjing Sports Bureau also increased its financial support to the Nanjing association to RMB 1 million (approximately USD 132,000). A School League Organising Committee was also set up in the district. The first round of the school league was organised by the District Sports and Education Bureau and from second round onwards they linked ups with the Nanjing association.
